In a surprise reversal of official policy, S.C. Governor Mark Sanford has ordered state officials to fly the USC flag over the State House in honor of the Gamecocks’ national college baseball title. Until the eight inning of last night’s title-clenching game against UCLA, the Governor had been threatening to veto the university as a whole as well as the entire sport of baseball.
The move also raised the hackles of Confederate flag supporters, who claim that winning a national championship should not be required to fly a flag on the Statehouse dome. Sons of Buffoonery, a Batesburg-Leesville secessionist group, insist that it is also important to honor national losers.
“We’ve got precedent on our side,” said SoB founder and chairman Jefferson Davis VII. “For years we had our flag up there and we never won nothing.”
